The Submerged Forest of Qiushan Lake | A Spectacular View Found Only in Early Summer

The submerged forest at Lake Shusenko in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, is a sight unique to this time of year, created when the lake’s water level rises due to snowmelt, submerging the bases of the trees. It is called the “submerged forest” because it looks as if the forest is floating on the lake.

The scenery created by the trees standing as if floating on the emerald-blue lake, combined with the fresh greenery, is truly breathtaking. On windless days, the sky and clouds are reflected on the lake’s surface, offering a view as beautiful as a painting.

The best time to see the submerged forest at Qifan Lake is typically from May through mid-June. It is expected to be visible until around the middle of this month.

However, due to planned long-term construction work related to the power plant, it is said that this scenery will not be visible for some time. The Submerged Forest is not expected to reappear until 2032.
